You Don’t Have to Navigate Life in America Alone

Starting over in a new country can feel overwhelming. Families often face language barriers, transportation challenges, unfamiliar systems, housing instability, food insecurity, and difficulty accessing healthcare, education, and employment opportunities.

The Downtown Denver Islamic Center’s Family Navigation Program exists to walk alongside immigrant, refugee, and low-income families as they build stable, healthy, and hopeful lives in Colorado.

Our care navigators provide culturally responsive, relationship-based support that helps families move from crisis toward confidence and independence.

What We Do
Case Management

We provide personalized support to help families navigate complex systems and overcome barriers during their transition to life in the United States.

Each family works with a care navigator who helps assess needs, coordinate services, advocate on their behalf, and provide ongoing guidance and follow-up support.

Housing Support

Safe and stable housing is critical to long-term wellbeing.

We help families navigate housing challenges by assisting with landlord communication, lease understanding, housing advocacy, utility setup, and referrals to rental or housing assistance resources when available.

Food Security

We help families access culturally appropriate food and essential household resources during times of instability or transition.

Support may include pantry access, halal food assistance, SNAP/WIC enrollment support, and referrals to community food partners.

Employment & Stability

Our program helps individuals build pathways toward financial independence and long-term stability.

We assist with job searches, resume development, interview preparation, applications, and accessing banking or financial services such as credit union accounts.

Health & Wellness

We help families understand and navigate healthcare systems that may feel unfamiliar or difficult to access.

Services include referrals to medical, dental, mental health, and disability providers, as well as support with Medicaid enrollment, appointment scheduling, and healthcare interpretation.

Education & ESL Support

Education is a key part of helping families successfully integrate and thrive.

We support school enrollment, ESL referrals, parent-school communication, and connections to higher education, GED, or vocational training opportunities.

Transportation & Mobility

Transportation barriers can make it difficult for families to access critical services and opportunities.

We help individuals understand transportation options, coordinate rides when needed, and assist with DMV navigation, permit preparation, and driver’s license support.

Cultural Orientation

Adjusting to a new culture can be overwhelming, especially for newly arrived families.

We provide culturally responsive guidance to help participants better understand life in the U.S., navigate public systems, build confidence, and feel more connected to their new community.

Our Approach

Our work is rooted in dignity, compassion, and cultural understanding.

Many of our staff and volunteers share lived experiences with the families we serve. We understand the barriers newcomers face because we have lived them ourselves.

We meet families where they are — emotionally, financially, culturally, and practically — and walk alongside them as trusted partners.
